CAPITALISM II GAME GUIDE SKIN
Parents that are college educated, with ample financial resources, physic stability, and shall I say it, the right skin color and sex.A family that owns substantial amounts of real property and financial assets and are “well connected.”.In capitalism, you are way out in front if you pick: Like basketball these rules give a big leg up to some people and essentially rule out others. If we really wanted to create a meritocracy, a society based on effort, we would eliminate most of it.Ĭapitalism has its rules – private ownership of property including money minimum government intrusion in the economy extensive property rights and so on. Tain’t fare Magee (inheritance I mean) because it can give some people such a headstart. They only have to be able to drool on command to finish in the big time.

At the extreme (say the Rockefellers) some people start on the 99-year line. Some start on the starting line, others on the five-yard line, still others do even better depending on the egg and sperm they chose at conception. Why are so many people poor while a few are unbelievably rich? Sure, lack of effort and bad luck play a role, but the primary reason is that there are wide disparities in people’s starting point after they burst bloodily from the womb. A better place needs to be found for the losers, losers with little or no place to go. We do not need to change the rules of basketball just because they are discriminatory, but we surely need to change the rules of capitalism to be fair. If they are not lucky enough to start with at least some of the advantages of successful people, they and their children are doomed through life to poverty and insecurity through no fault of their own. Contrary to Ronald Reagan, it is not as simple as grabbing a lawn mower and working your way up. I care a lot because there is no alternative for the people at the bottom of the heap.

Should we care about this failure? Well, I cannot speak for everyone, but I certainly care. You can be forced through no fault of your own into grinding poverty and smashed dreams with little hope for improvement. If you fail in a market society such as ours you have no place to go. If you fail at basketball, you just move on to something else. The path to succeeding in the capitalist fray is not the same as failing to inherit the right genes to play NBA basketball. If you did not have the wisdom to choose the right egg and the right sperm to create your sorry ass, you could really be up shit creek with no paddle. Now, when it comes to the game of capitalism, the similarity breaks down. Not many people are offended by the discrimination against the short and clumsy because they reason that these folks can always go find something else to do – maybe ping-pong or the Opera. Over the years the rules of basketball have evolved to the point of where there is a huge advantage to being a tall, athletic person. When you think of it, both basketball and capitalism are games based on rules decided on long ago by men to create the two competitive systems, one a sport and the other an economic system.
